Overview
Subaru has introduced a redesigned version of its popular Crosstrek small crossover SUV for the 2024 model year, though the changes may not be immediately apparent. Retaining its familiar size both inside and out, the new Crosstrek continues to offer a selection of two four-cylinder engines, all paired with standard all-wheel drive. While the styling remains largely unchanged and the interior receives a new infotainment system, the overall aesthetic still features a utilitarian look reminiscent of its predecessor. Nonetheless, given the enduring popularity of the previous Crosstrek, we anticipate that this incrementally improved third-generation model will continue to hold appeal in the segment, particularly with the introduction of the rugged Wilderness trim level. What’s New for 2024?
The third-generation Crosstrek arrives with subtle yet notable enhancements, showcasing an evolutionary design approach. While the sheetmetal boasts new contours, the overall silhouette remains reminiscent of its predecessor. Notable updates include a larger grille adorned with textured hexagons, expanded black plastic wheel-arch protectors, and prominent black air intakes for brake cooling.
Subaru’s efforts extend beyond aesthetics, with chassis stiffening for enhanced safety and a slightly softer suspension setup to refine ride quality. The EyeSight safety suite now offers improved detection capabilities, while upgraded front seats enhance comfort. Across all trim levels, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are standard, with higher trims featuring an impressive 11.6-inch vertically oriented touchscreen.
Additionally, the 2024 Crosstrek introduces the rugged Wilderness trim, boasting off-road enhancements such as increased ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and an enhanced dual-mode X-Mode system, further solidifying its adventurous appeal.

Comfy Interior
Subaru implemented some changes to the interior, although they may not be immediately noticeable to all but the most devoted Subaru enthusiasts, except for the prominent infotainment touchscreen featured in the upper trims.
Notably, Subaru focused on enhancing the front seats, which now boast increased padding and larger bolsters—a welcomed improvement, particularly during off-road excursions.
Furthermore, Subaru deserves credit for significantly reducing cabin noise levels, greatly enhancing the overall driving experience.
While the presence of plastic materials persists in this spacious cabin, it does contribute to easier maintenance with its wipeable surface.
Offering better-than-average cargo space for its segment and average rear-seat legroom, the Crosstrek proves to be well-suited for adventures accommodating up to four adults and their belongings.
Familiar Exterior
Subaru opted for a conservative approach with the exterior styling, refraining from making any drastic changes.
The most notable updates can be seen at the front end, where alterations to the grille, bumper, lower fascia, and introduction of new brake-cooling intakes provide a refreshed appearance for the Crosstrek.
Despite these changes, the Crosstrek maintains its recognizable identity.
The introduction of the new Wilderness model brings a distinctive and rugged aesthetic to the Crosstrek lineup.
Notable features include increased ground clearance, aggressive cladding with “SUBARU” lettering on the back, vibrant yellow accents, and 17-inch black wheels fitted with all-terrain tires, setting the Wilderness model apart from the rest of the Crosstrek lineup.
Specifications
Subaru has maintained the same two engines from the previous Crosstrek for the 2024 model. These engines have proven reliability and performance. While the EPA has yet to provide fuel economy estimates, we’ve included last year’s mileage as a reference point.
One significant change for 2024 is the elimination of the manual transmission option. Now, all Crosstrek models come equipped with a CVT, an automatic transmission system that utilizes belts and pulleys instead of traditional gears. Subaru has refined its CVT to deliver smoother transitions between gears, and drivers can engage with the process through steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.
An inherent feature of Subaru’s engine design is its “flat” layout, with cylinders arranged horizontally. This configuration contributes to a lower center of gravity, enhancing overall stability. Despite this, the engines’ performance remains competitive with similar models in the market.
For the base and Premium trims, the Crosstrek is powered by a 2.0-liter flat 4-cylinder engine generating 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. Estimated EPA fuel economy for city/highway driving is 27/34 mpg.
On the other hand, the Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trims are equipped with a 2.5-liter flat 4-cylinder engine producing 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Estimated EPA fuel economy for these models remains at 27/34 mpg based on 2023 estimates
