The 2024 Volvo XC40 streamlines options by offering just one drivetrain, now with previously optional features included as standard. From its appealing exterior design to its Google-based infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, the XC40 impresses with its comprehensive set of safety features. As the smallest SUV in Volvo’s lineup with an internal combustion engine, the XC40 sits below the all-electric XC40 Recharge, reviewed separately, and the upcoming C40 Recharge and EX30 hatchback-like model. Positioned as a more affordable alternative to the XC60 and XC90, the XC40 stands out as a stylish SUV equipped with an array of advanced technology features.

For 2024, Volvo revamps the XC40 lineup, discontinuing the front-drive option in favor of all-wheel drive paired with a more potent engine across all trims. The base Core model now boasts additional features such as wireless charging, keyless entry/ignition, 19-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree camera system, and a cabin air purifier, which were previously optional. Meanwhile, the Ultimate trim receives upgrades like pixel headlight technology with cornering lights, 20-inch alloy wheels, and powered child locks for the rear doors, also now included as standard. New paint options, Cloud Blue and Vapour Grey Metallic, replace Black Stone and Thunder Grey Metallic, while the exterior theme shifts from “Base” to “Bright,” adding a subtle touch to the already appealing design of this SUV.

Equipped with a robust 247-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the 2024 Volvo XC40 showcases impressive acceleration, reaching 60 mph in a swift 6.1 seconds. Beyond its spirited performance, the XC40 impresses with its effortless demeanor, delivering comfort on the highway, ease in city driving, and a sense of calm compared to more aggressive counterparts like the BMW X1. Despite being the smallest and most affordable Volvo SUV, the XC40 embodies the true essence of the Volvo brand.

In the realm of subcompact SUVs, whether luxurious or not, the 2024 XC40 offers ample space. Its thoughtfully designed cabin boasts premium materials and features a vertically oriented 9-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Upholding Volvo’s reputation for comfort, the front seats provide exceptional support, while rear passengers benefit from 36.1 inches of legroom—slightly less than some rivals but still accommodating for taller individuals, as confirmed by our 6-foot editors.

However, when it comes to cargo space behind the rear seats, the XC40 falls slightly short compared to competitors like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, offering adequate but smaller 16 cubic feet of luggage space.

Google Built-In
The infotainment system of the XC40 integrates Google Maps and voice control through the command, “Hey, Google.” It facilitates over-the-air updates and is equipped with pairs of USB-C ports at both the front and rear. Additional apps, such as Waze, can be downloaded from the Google Play store.

Digital Driver Information Display
Standard in the XC40, this 12.3-inch display replaces traditional dials, contributing to the cabin’s futuristic ambiance, a trend seen across many luxury brands.

Pilot Assist
Part of the adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist aids in steering corrections to maintain the XC40 in its lane, offering relief during long drives. While not hands-free, it alleviates fatigue. Pilot Assist/adaptive cruise control is available as an option in the Plus trim or comes standard in the Ultimate version.

Harman Kardon Premium Sound System
As an optional upgrade, the Harman Kardon 13-speaker/600-watt premium sound system enhances the audio experience, known for its superior sound quality and reputation as a top-notch audio manufacturer.

The 2024 XC40 is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, delivering 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Featuring a mild hybrid drivetrain with an electric motor, the engine stop/restart action is notably smooth, enhancing overall efficiency.

Premium gasoline is required for optimal performance, and the XC40 boasts an impressive maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, a notable feat in its segment.
