If you’ve been saying ‘uh-dell’, you’re wrong
So it turns out most of us have been pronouncing Adele’s name wrong, and the beloved songwriter has finally put us right. You can listen to her reveal the correct way to say her name below:
Adele says we’ve been pronouncing her name wrong
Ahead of her rescheduled 32-date Las Vegas residency – for which some tickets are being resold for almost £40,000 – it was time for Adele to get something off her chest.
The 34-year-old ‘Hello’ singer was speaking at the afterparty for the launch of her new music video for ‘I Drink Wine’ and taking questions from fans.
One music lover sent in a question remotely via a video clip, and it turned out she was one of the few people in the country who’s been saying Adele’s name correctly.

She said: “Hi Adele, I’m Annie and I’m from London, and my question is, ‘On your journey to self love while writing 30, did your perspective on how you saw yourself when you wrote 25 change at all, and how?”
A pretty hefty topic then, but initially that wasn’t what Adele wanted to talk about.
The musician said: “She said my name perfectly!”
So, while in the past it was pretty much agreed upon that you pronounced the ‘Rolling in the Deep’ singer’s name Ah-dell, it turns out we’re all wrong.
You actually say it Uh-dale, with the emphasis on the second syllable.
Yep, it’s a subtle difference and you might need to listen to it a few times to get your head around it – but we stand corrected.
As to the answer to Annie’s question, Adele heartbreakingly said that while she was confident and settled writing 25, she ‘didn’t rate herself as a human being’ when writing 30.

Prior to writing the album, the singer filed for divorce from her partner of eight years Simon Konecki in 2019. The pair share a son: Angelo, aged ten.
Speaking to Rolling Stone about the separation, Adele said: “It made me really sad. Then having so many people that I don’t know know that I didn’t make that work… it f**king devastated me.
“I was embarrassed. No one made me feel embarrassed, but you feel like you didn’t do a good job.”
Many of the songs on Adele’s 30 deal with that heartbreak, and fans will soon be able to hear them performed live in Vegas.
When you’re cheering her name though, make sure it uh-dale, not ah-dell.
