As the ongoing crisis in Gaza continues, netizens have launched a new campaign called “BlockOut 2024” where they are blocking celebrities, they believe have not used their social media platforms to shed light on the pressing social issues surrounding Gaza.

The “BlockOut 2024” moment, also known as the “digital guillotine” has been trending on the microblogging platform X/ Twitter ever since several A-listers attended the prestigious Met Gala 2024 in New York.

As the civilians in Gaza suffer from one of the worst humanitarian crises, a result of Israel and Hamas taking up arms against each other in October last year, the “BlockOut 2024” moment, which is a collective effort initially pushed by TikTok creators to publicly denounce high-profile figures who are staying mum on the ongoing humanitarian crisis has taken over the internet, – and how.

The moment has now birthed viral hashtags including #letthemeatcake, #celebrityblocklist, and #blockout2024, igniting public outrage and shedding light on the staggering number of innocent lives lost due to the ongoing Israel-Gaza war.

Ever since several A-list names attended the Met Gala 2024, last week the campaign has gained momentum, even more due to Israel’s military offense on Rafah. Taylor Swift, Cardi B, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, and more A-listers have been called out by several social media users. They have also reportedly lost thousands of followers on social media.

TikTok influencer Haley Kalil came under fire for lip-syncing the words, “Let them eat cake” in a now-deleted TikTok shot during the Met Gala. However, she apologized for her behavior.

The now-viral moment is aimed at celebrities to use their influence and speak up about the pressing issues online. It also aims to create more awareness of the devastating social topic and to push forward global action for a ceasefire.
