As much as fans would like it, FromSoftware seems to be trying something new other than open-world games after Elden Ring DLC.
SUMMARY
- Elden Ring is FromSoftware’s best selling franchise yet.
- A major part of its success is owed to its perfect balance of the open-world level design.
- The director of the game has revealed how the studio will not be moving forward with open-world games as its main formula despite Elden Ring’s success.
A major credit for Elden Ring’s spectacular success is owed to the fact that Hidetaka Miyazaki was able to get the feel of an open-world setting perfectly right on the very first attempt. This further begs the question if the studio will now choose to stick to this genre of video games, or will they venture out to see what new fields they can conquer once again?
Tomorrow, i.e. 21st of June is going to mark a historic event in the history of FromSoftware as well, being the day that their largest expansion to date, the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC releases on its respective platforms, bringing a much-anticipated addition of content to Miyazaki’s latest release 2 years after it was first launched.
Why Hidetaka Miyazaki Will Not Focus On Open-World Games After Elden Ring’s DLC?
The 2022 Game of the Year award-winning title has won the hearts of millions of gamers around the globe, becoming a sensation in pop culture and the gaming community alike. As stated before, having a perfect balance of an open-world level design is one of the reasons for Elden Ring’s success, which makes fans wonder if Hidetaka Miyazaki will take up a similar project in the future or not.
Talking about the prospect of creating similar games in the future, the director stated the following in an interview via GameSpot:
I wouldn’t necessarily say that open world is going to become the new base or foundation or standard of the company. As I kind of hinted in earlier responses, we have a lot of game directors and designers who are growing, so we’d love to keep an open mind in terms of the types of games that we develop. So, of course, I can’t really say anything at this exact moment, but perhaps when you see future announcements from From Software you’ll look back at this point and think, “Ah, that’s what he meant.”
Miyazaki mentioned how other new talents have begun to sprout within the studio with many new game directors and designers who are now growing and acquiring more experience. Having such an army of a talented and dedicated team, it will be hard to stay on one particular formula or standard for the company, hence prompting the studio to keep a broad mind in the types of games they make.
How New Game Directors And Designers Impact The Future Of FromSoftware
Up until now, the majority of the projects made by the studio were undertaken and mainly led by Hidetaka Miyazaki as the lead game director. While this has helped establish FromSoftware as one of the greatest game-producing houses in the industry, it seems to be about time the studio experiments and discovers what else can they do differently with the help of up-and-coming talent.
While talking about Hidetaka Miyazaki, despite the major success of Elden Ring. the director still seems to be on the quest to make his ideal RPG game, even inviting other game developers to finally step up and make one for him so he can finally experience what he has been delivering to his fans for the past 2 decades.
Elden Ring is available to purchase on Steam.
