- Sony has teased the development of a live-action Miles Morales movie, but he could also be introduced alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU’s future
After his successful run in the animated Spider-Verse franchise, Miles Morales is set to make the move to live-action as a new version of Spider-Man. Miles Morales was the Spider-Man of Marvel Comics’ Ultimate Universe, who made the move into Marvel’s main continuity following 2015’s Secret Wars event. The young wall-crawler made his big-screen debut, not yet in the MCU, in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and returned in the successful 2023 sequel, and has since been teased to be debuting in live-action.
Miles Morales’ Spider-Man has been an incredibly popular addition to Sony’s Marvel movie franchises, as well as various video games featuring both him and Peter Parker’s original Spider-Man. At only 13-years-old when he became Spider-Man, Miles Morales was one of the youngest characters to take up the superhero mantle, but became a significant part of Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man stories. There has been speculation about Miles Morales making the move to live-action for several years, and now progress seems to be being made on his own live-action movie.
Miles Morales WILL Get His Own Spider-Man Movie
Back in May 2023, producer Amy Pascal teased the development of a live-action movie focused on Miles Morales’ Spider-Man during a conversation with Variety. When asked about Miles Morales and Spider-Woman-centric movies, Pascal noted that “you’ll see all of it… it’s all happening.” While she initially neglected to confirm when a Miles Morales movie might release, a more recent discussion with Variety (via X) in February 2024 saw Pascal reveal that this film wouldn’t happen until “we make two more movies.”
Someday. Not until we make two more movies. Someday. Someday. We’re very happy doing [the animated Spider-Verse movies].
These comments caused some confusion as to which “two movies” Pascal was referring to. This prompted Spider-Verse franchise producer Christopher Miller to clarify that Pascal was referring to the animated sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and another live-action Spider-Man movie in the MCU, starring Tom Holland (via X). No Miles Morales movie is yet on the docket for either the MCU or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, but Pascal and Miller’s comments confirm that plans are in place for Brooklyn’s Spider-Man to make the move to live-action.
Why There’s Never Been A Miles Morales Movie
While news about the development of a Miles Morales movie is surely exciting, it’s a wonder the character hasn’t made his live-action debut already. Back in 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach spoke to Indie Wire, and warned of the dangers of having multiple Spider-Men in the same story. They suggested that focusing on Peter Parker alone is the best way to deliver an effective Spider-Man story, and this attitude may have contributed to Miles Morales’ absence from Spider-Man’s live-action adventures.
The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today’s world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don’t know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.
Evidently, Sony’s animated Spider-Verse movies have disproven this idea, as many different variations of Spider-Man have been featured alongside Miles Morales to huge success. This franchise has even spawned spinoffs, such as a planned Spider-Woman movie, and a live-action series focused on Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir. 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home also saw three Spider-Men team up against a group of powerful villains, proving that Arad and Tolmach were simply wrong, and making now the perfect time to bring Miles Morales’ Spider-Man into the fray.
When To Expect A Miles Morales Movie
Currently, Sony is working on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the final chapter in Miles Morales’ animated trilogy. This movie doesn’t yet have a scheduled release date, so it’s difficult to know when Miles Morales will be available for a live-action adaptation, as Beyond the Spider-Verse will conclude his animated story beforehand. Even so, it’s possible that the upcoming live-action version of Miles Morales won’t be the same iteration who is voiced by Shameik Moore in Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise, meaning he could appear in person sooner.
Sony and Marvel Studios are also working together to develop a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU. Again, none of these movies have release dates, but the MCU’s upcoming Spider-Man 4 will presumably release before the Multiverse Saga concludes with 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Since Pascal commented that a Miles Morales movie wouldn’t be produced until after Beyond the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man 4, it will likely be several years before this much anticipated movie is released.
Why There’s Still No Miles Morales Live-Action Spider-Man Movie
A Miles Morales live-action Spider-Man movie is bound to happen, and when it might be released has been revealed — and it makes a lot of sense.
How The MCU Already Set Up Miles Morales
While it will still be quite some time before Miles Morales makes his solo movie debut, there have been several teases towards the young hero’s existence in the MCU already. These date back all the way to Tom Holland’s first solo movie as Peter Parker, Spider-Man: Homecoming. In 2017’s Homecoming, Donald Glover made a brief appearance as Aaron Davis, Miles Morales’ uncle. Davis mentioned his nephew, and even called Miles in a deleted scene from the Phase 3 movie. Glover returned in his villainous Prowler costume in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, described as “MCU Prowler”.
Aaron Davis’ existence in the MCU’s main continuity proves that Miles Morales is around, ready and waiting to become the new Spider-Man. However, multiversal versions of Miles Morales were also alluded to in Spider-Man: No Way Home during a conversation between Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. Electro thought his version of Spider-Man might have been Black, but suggested that there must be a Black Spider-Man out there somewhere. Unbeknownst to him, this is the case, and it hopefully won’t be long before this iteration of Spider-Man graces the big screen.
