Victoria Beckham shocked fans this week when she declared that she ‘no longer cares’ what anyone thinks about her body and life is ‘too short’ to count calories. The 50-year-old designer has a famously limited diet but insisted in a recent chat with Grazia magazine that she wouldn’t go as far as to give up her beloved wine and she just wants to ‘have a nice time’.
She did, however, admit her diet was ‘disciplined’, stating: ‘This is how I look. I’m going to make the best of it, work hard at it. I’m very disciplined with the way that I eat, the way that I work out and the way I work. That’s just who I am.’ It perhaps undersells her extreme eating habits, with her husband David previously revealing that Victoria has eaten the same meal every single day for 25 years – grilled fish and steamed vegetables.
‘I get quite emotional about food and wine, when I’m eating something great I want everyone to try it,’ he said. ‘Unfortunately I’m married to someone that has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years! Since I met her she only eats grilled fish [and] steamed vegetables. She will very rarely deviate from that.’
David added: ‘The only time she’s probably ever shared something that’s been on my plate was actually when she was pregnant with Harper and it was the most amazing thing. It was one of my favourite evenings. I can’t remember what it was but I know she’s not eaten it since.’ In July, Victoria responded to this confession, telling Vogue Australia her husband made her tastes ‘sound boring’ when in fact she fills her diet with ‘healthy fat’ and regularly does detoxes where she abstains from drinking alcohol. She said: ‘I mean, talk about making me sound boring! No. What he meant is that he’s never met anyone who is more disciplined with the way that they eat.’
Victoria added: ‘I eat lots of healthy fat: fish, avocado, nuts, that sort of thing. I do drink alcohol, unless I have a reason not to. I’ll detox from anything for three to six months where I won’t drink. I’m quite extreme in anything I do, whether it’s eating or working out or drinking or not drinking.’ Victoria’s extreme diet has hit the headlines over the years, with Rio Ferdinand also giving an insight into her eating habits.
The retired English footballer, 44, is friends with Victoria’s husband David after playing football together at the World Cup and would sometimes dine with the couple during training. While speaking to Australian radio show Kyle and Jackie O, host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson admitted she was ‘obsessed’ with Victoria’s diet. Rio responded: ‘I’ve never seen her eat anything. I don’t remember anything that sticks out of my memory, to be honest.’
But this isn’t the first time that Victoria’s diet has been talked about with the the fashion designer becoming notorious for being a picky eater. Chef Gordon Ramsay offered more information about her ‘disciplined’ tastes in 2011, when Victoria was pregnant with daughter Harper. Clearly not allowing any pregnancy cravings to allow her to deviate from her strict diet, Gordon recalled she asked for the smoked trout salad and asked for it plain with the dressing on the side. According to the menu, the dish is normally served with grapefruit, avocado, red onion and lemon, but Victoria requested these be taken off.
Fellow famed chef Dani Garcia, also spoke about her food choices, detailing her ‘odd’ dinner demands when she attended Sergio Ramos’ wedding in 2019. Dani recalled how Victoria had coconut water by her ‘all of the time’ as well as bowls of mints, as he branded the habits ‘odd’ in an interview. Touching on what it was like to cook for the designer at the June 2019 wedding banquet near Seville, Dani said on Spanish TV: ‘It was very strange. Victoria Beckham changed the whole menu. It was very sad because when you make such an effort, not just me and my team but the bride and groom and everyone else to create a unique menu.’
‘Hers was totally different and just based around vegetables. And then there were some odd things that I’ve never seen in my life. She had coconut water, all the time, a bowl of mints and then on the other side hydroalcoholic gel which is very famous now but back then wasn’t because the Covid pandemic hadn’t started. It was complicated giving Victoria her menu that night.’ Disputing Dani’s version of events, a source close to Victoria said: ‘This makes a great story but isn’t fair or accurate – the most Victoria would have done when asked about dietary requirements is ask for some plain fish and vegetables.’
