A loved-up couple have spoken out after being branded “freaks” and “white trash” for getting one of their sisters to be a surrogate mum to their twins.
Joseph and Nathan Hughes, who’ve been together for 13 years, dreamed of adding a child to their family, and looked to a relative to help out. They turned to Joseph’s sister Breeanna in a bid to expand their loving unit.
The duo, who own a luxury hair salon in Texas, USA, asked their friend Kortney to donate eggs, while surrogate Breeanna agreed to carry the children. Now, Brianna has given birth to the pair’s twins.
Speaking on the Love Don’t Judge podcast, Joseph said: “I have always known that I want children. I was very clear with Nathan from the time we met that when I was 35 I was bringing babies home.”
Nathan was originally unsure about being a father and found himself “freaking out” when Joseph turned 33 and began talking about children. But now says he “can’t imagine” not doing it.
Having figured out their plan, they knew it had to be Breeanna who’d be carrying the babies. Joseph said: “After discussing it we decided that Breeanna being the carrier was the most important thing to us because I knew that if something did happen, I could trust her.”
Yet, the road to fatherhood has been rocky for couple, with heartache hitting when Joseph’s first embryo didn’t make it through the IVF thaw, before Breeanna suffered a miscarriage seven weeks into the second attempt.
Despite their excitement to become doting dads, Joseph says it is “disturbing how much hate there is” in the world. While Breeanna revealed that the family has been subjected to “uneducated” remarks from trolls.
She explained: “[People] don’t really understand that it’s not my DNA mixing with my brothers or even my brother-in-laws, I’m literally just housing them for nine months.”
The family has faced harsh criticism online, being labelled as “freaks”, “white trash”, and “an abomination”. Some have even suggested that the twins will face “more mental issues ahead”.
Nathan added: “I knew that people were going to judge us for being gay and automatically put us in a category of you shouldn’t have kids.”
Joseph concluded: “We don’t want to focus on the negative and I don’t try to give them any attention, so we’re going to rise above.”
