Carol tells that, there was this one time, when she tried to escape but her husband caught her and he punched her in the face. She also revealed that Nicki would sometimes spend her nights crying inside her room because of how her father treated her mother and her two brothers.

Carol relates that there was an incident where Robert burned their house down in New York because of “rage.” In an interview, Nicki Minaj revealed that her childhood is filled with “‘A lot of arguing, lots of screaming – there were holes punched into the walls in anger and cops being called to the house all the time.” She added that she was always afraid that something bad is going to happen to her mother.

Nicki Minaj revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone that when she arrived in U.S., she would always kneel down and pray to God to help her become successful and rich, so that she can take care of her mother.

Minaj came to New York City when she was five years old. She grew up in Trinidad and she also lived in Tobago with her grandparents.
