Roger, the friendly labrador retriever who didn’t quite make the cut as a drug-sniffing dog due to his playful nature, has become a beloved figure in Taiwan for his invaluable role in the aftermath of a recent devastating earthquake.

Deployed alongside other capable canines after the 7.4-magnitude quake struck Taiwan’s eastern coast, Roger, now 8 years old, assisted in locating the body of a young woman amidst the destruction in Taroko National Park. His lively personality and intelligence, coupled with his initial career setback, captured the hearts of many in Taiwan.

Born into a training center for drug detection dogs, Roger’s penchant for fun and people proved to be his undoing in that field. However, his exuberance made him an ideal candidate for a career change to become a rescue dog.

During a media interview with his handler, Roger’s enthusiasm was evident as he playfully interacted with reporters, showcasing his newfound role as a rescue dog. Chen Chih-san, captain of the rescue dog unit, highlighted Roger’s suitability for rescue work, emphasizing the qualities that make him excel in this field.

Roger, who has participated in numerous rescue missions throughout his career, has garnered praise and admiration from the Taiwanese public, with many expressing gratitude for his heroic efforts. While retirement is on the horizon for Roger, his legacy as a dedicated and beloved rescue dog in Taiwan will endure.
