A hint about when Spider-Man 4 will release may have arrived as Sony Pictures sets two new release dates. After Spider-Man: No Way Home concluded the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland, it was unclear where the franchise would go. That is, until earlier this year when Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed Spider-Man 4 was in the works. More recently, Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal and Holland have both offered additional updates, revealing the movie is in development, but has paused in light of the WGA strike. Now, Sony Pictures has set two new release dates for untitled Marvel movies: November 8, 2024 and June 27, 2025. Already, speculation is circulating about what movies may eventually take those dates, with many suggesting Venom 3 for the 2024 date and Spider-Man 4 for the 2025 date.
The Venom threequel with returning franchise star Tom Hardy was previously rumored to receive an October 2024 release date; with filming set to start later this year, it’s a logical pick for the November 2024 date. As for the 2025 release date, Spider-Man 4 is certainly a contender considering what’s known of the development status.
All Evidence Spider-Man 4 Could Release In 2025
The Spider-Man: No Way Home follow-up is currently in the early planning stages, with Holland having revealed details of Sony and Marvel’s meetings about Spider-Man 4. Based on his comments, it seems they’ve cracked the story, but that doesn’t mean work can progress at this time. Since the WGA is on strike, development has paused on Spider-Man 4 and, once work can resume, the first thing needed will be a screenwriter. Even with the WGA strike and Holland’s year-long acting break (which he’s said he’s eight months into), 2025 is still a feasible release date to hit for Spider-Man 4.
Perhaps the biggest evidence to Spider-Man 4 eventually taking Sony’s 2025 release date is the studio doesn’t have any other live-action movies as far along in development. Since Sony specified the 2025 date for a live-action movie, Spider-Verse 4 and the Spider-Woman spinoff can both be ruled out. Other contenders include:
- Jackpot: The last update on this Marvel movie arrived in 2020 when it was revealed Marc Guggenheim had been working on the script, but there has been no news since.
- Untitled Roberto Orci movie: Sony tapped Roberto Orci in 2020 to write a Marvel movie, but no updates have been revealed since.
- Untitled Olivia Wilde movie: Olivia Wilde was hired in 2020 to direct a female-centric Marvel movie for Sony. As of December 2022, she is still attached, but no other updates have been reported.
- Hypno-Hustler: In December 2022, Donald Glover was tapped to star in and produce a movie about Marvel character Hypno-Hustler from writer Myles Murphy. However, considering his live-action appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and no additional updates, the status of the project is unknown.
So, while Sony has other live-action Marvel movies in development, and they could theoretically make that June 2025 release date, it’s much more likely to be Spider-Man 4. New information about Holland’s next Spidey movie or one of these other projects might change in the coming months, but for now it seems Spider-Man 4 is headed toward a 2025 release.
